Love this fun tale! A little bit of humor, romance, history, and mystery all rolled into one! Also, a realistic story! The characters are life-like and make you wish you could really meet them. I stayed up until 130 in the morning just to finish it off! Thanks for the good-read!
I just finished Just Shy of Paradise, and thoroughly enjoyed it! The last 100 pages were read in any spare moment I had because I was so into the story! I loved the relatable characters and the story. I loved how Native American history was explained and explored, bringing in great dedication and emotional aspects. Great book, as are the author's others!!
Carole Thayne Warburton writes an interesting story using a refreshingly unusual protagonist. Lily Anderson is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty - that's about all that is normal about her. She's painfully shy, prone to horrendous anxiety attacks, wide in the hips, addicted to ice cream, and overcoming an addiction to alcohol. She also loves fishing, and hopes one day to be in a romantic relationship. She meets Sky Brown, a Native American Shoshone, who is accused of stealing her grandfather's fishing pole worth a few thousand dollars. Throughout this tale, Carol weaves in bits of fascinating Shoshone history in a way that broadens the reader's perspective and understanding of the wrongs inflicted upon the Northwestern Shoshone. As the reader, we relate to Lily while hoping that she can rise above her fears and see the true beauty that has miraculously come into her life.
I may be a tad biased, because this author also happens to have been my 8th grade English teacher. That said, I found Warburton's "Just Shy of Paradise" to be impossible to put down, from the first page! Before you pick it up, get snacks and settle down with a comfy quilt. You won't want to stop until the last page is done! Lily is a stunningly beautiful twenty-something, but doesn't know it. She lives in her late grandmother's home in the beautiful town of Paradise, Cache Valley, Utah. She is known as the town's miracle child, because she was saved from drowning on her fourth birthday, by a rescuer still unknown to the town or to Lily. She also suffers from a social anxiety disorder, but is on the mend, thanks to a good therapy group. In a short period of a few days, she keeps crossing paths with Sky, a recently divorced thirty-something man with intense blue eyes, and a noble, generous spirit. He also happens to be half-Shoshone and half-Swedish, and carries a weight of sadness on his shoulders, the source of which Lily can't identify.

Central to the story is the discovery of a rare bamboo fishing pole that belonged to Lily's grandfather, which unbeknownst to Lily, is of a rare quality, and constructed by Sky's father before he died, years earlier. Once it is discovered in the town that Lily, who has never learned to fish, possesses this rare item, numerous others seek to buy it from her, for exorbitant amounts. But then when it is suddenly discovered to be missing, Lily and Sky are thrown into an investigation process that yields surprising and unhappy results. As these two join hands and become good friends, they are able to see new possibilities for their lives. As they help each other through the painful process of learning to trust, and then forgiving when needed, they discover that healing and pure love awaits them. Looking forward to reading other books by the talented Carole Warburton!
Two stories are skillfully woven together in Just Shy of Paradise by Carole Thayne Warburton. First, there is a contemporary obstacle-filled romance. When Sky Brown meets Lily Anderson and they learn of connections their ancestors had in Cache Valley, Utah, he "even wonders if his ancestors had orchestrated events so he would meet her." Soon after their first encounter on the Blacksmith Fork River in Cache Valley, however, ownership of a one-of-a-kind fly fishing rod comes into question, and becomes a symbol that will challenge their developing trust and cause them to question each other and their own belief systems.

Their story is played out in the very northern Utah valley where Sky's mostly peaceful Shoshone ancestors once farmed, hunted, and fished, until driven away by events such as the shameful Bear River Massacre, when hundreds of the natives were exterminated by the U.S. Army. While Sky tries to rid his heart of bitterness over this and other wrongs done to his people, he reflects "It seems to me that our ancestors aren't exactly in another place---that they are right here with us - - - and that what happened to them happens to us." The words of Chief Sagwitch echo in his heart, though, and challenge the hatred he feels "I have ever been an advocate for peace. I abhor war today. I want peace. I want peace today. I want to be at peace with all men . . ."

In a parallel experience, Lily finds and reads a journal penned by Emma, a young Scandinavian ancestor who struggles with the settlers' treatment of the Shoshone. When she meets a tall strapping young Shoshone, her account reads "He held the sack of potatoes and said thank you slowly. And then he took off his bear's tooth necklace and gave it to me. Never have I had such a gift. I am embarrassed even now to write about him and how it felt to see him again. He left and joined the other Indians who waited for him. Even if I never see Topi again, at least I know his name and know he lived through the battle. I am grateful to God for letting me bask in His goodness, for seeing to the desires of my heart.

Only when histories are revealed, old wrongs righted, justice granted, and forgiveness freely given can Sky and Lily learn to trust each other, as each must face their own fears and demons before they can truly be free to love.

Just Shy of Paradise is a well-balanced, fascinating read with powerful historical and cultural references that raise challenging implications for the present. It is permeated with a haunting sense of place and ancestry, causing the reader to ponder the role of personal heritage in the development of the people and nations we are today.
